It's Standing Room Only For Light Opera Fans As The 'Sound Of Music' Comes To Town

A scene in Maria's bedroom where the children are calmed during the thunderstorm by Maria singing "My Favourite Things".
It's standing room only if people want to see the "Sound of Music" performed by the Burnley Light Opera Society which opened at the Empire last night, Monday the 26th October 1970. For every seat has been taken, and there is only very limited standing accommodation.

There was almost a near disaster when the scenery had not arrived by Sunday night, but it arrived about 1-30 a.m. on Monday from the Palace Theatre Manchester, after the final production of the musical there which finished at 10 p.m. on Saturday. The stage staff worked through the night, stopped for breakfast and then worked through the morning to complete the preparation for the show, given by one of the society's smallest casts for several years: but members are hoping for the most successful show for a long time.

The musical has not only proved popular with the public. There were 128 applications for the roles of the six Von Trapp children, and auditions to choose the parts were keenly contested.
