A happy weekend for Burnley who added four points to their league total at Rawtenstall on Saturday 20th June 1970 and then reached the semi-final of the Worsley Cup on Sunday at the expense of their neighbours, Lowerhouse, who had drawn at home with Rambsbottom the previous day.
After a £17 gate on the Saturday the West Enders had to count one of £141. 18s for the sunbathed Sunday game in which Burnley used the allotted 36 overs to score 202 for six wickets. Lowerhouse replied with 121 in 28.7 overs.
Neil Whalley emerged as the batsman of the weekend. After some big hitting at Rawtenstall he thrashed the West End bowling for 71 after being given a life at 10. He scored 50 in 46 minutes, his half-century, including nine boundaries and a hit for six.
Burnley, sent in to bat, were given an excellent start by Roland Harrison and Peter Brown. Lowerhouse made a disastrous start to their reply and had Mike Swift, Barry Smith and Gordon Jones back in the pavilion with 17 on the board. Brian Higgin and Malcolm Blackhurst took the score to 45 and following Higgin's dismissal, Blackhurst and Holland increased the score to 105 and when Holland departed that was virtually the end of resistance.
