A long hot summer day brought record crowds to Reedley on Saturday for the Joseph Lucas gala and fete. It gave organisers and visitors alike a glorious afternoon's fun but it was a close run thing, for the weather broke at about 6.45pm, just giving most people time to get home before the rain began.

The beaming face of television star Roy Castle, who had the packed Lucas Gala queen marquee rocking with laughter, was matched by the smiles of chief executives of the Burnley Lucas organisation. And none seemed happier than Mr. Brian Whittaker, the Lucas sports and social organiser.
