Sunshine Gala Day Drew The Crowds: Attractions Had Something To Suite Everyone (4 of 10)

One of the biggest attractions at the children's funfair were the space-hopper balls. This enthusiastic bunch of children show their liking for this popular novelty toy.
A long hot summer day brought record crowds to Reedley on Saturday for the Joseph Lucas gala and fete. It gave organisers and visitors alike a glorious afternoon's fun but it was a close run thing, for the weather broke at about 6.45pm, just giving most people time to get home before the rain began.
There was an attendance estimated at around 18,000 to 19,000 who took full opportunity of all the attractions offered. The beaming face of television star Roy Castle, who had the packed Lucas Gala queen marquee rocking with laughter, was matched by the smiles of chief executives of the Burnley Lucas organisation. And none seemed happier than Mr. Brian Whittaker, the Lucas sports and social organiser.
The gala involves a tremendous amount of hard work for the firm's employees with hundreds of volunteers giving up their afternoon to a variety of jobs.
