A Family Sunshine Show Breaks All The Records

A display by the Alsation Club was an item of interest for all the family.
It was sunshine all the way for the annual Lucas Gala with the temperature just topping the 70 degree mark and the attendance not far short of 20,000. This broke all records for the show, which has been a highlight on the area's calendar since 1946.
And there was plenty of fun and enjoyment for everyone. If the menfolk were not hot enough in the blazing sun the gala queen contest was guaranteed to raise the temperature. The bevy of 19 gorgeous girls were quite an eyeful for the audience crowded into the marquee. And afterwards the women were able to gaze in awe at the rippling muscles of the Tarzan-types in the Mr. Reedley contest or watch professional wrestling which provided some highly entertaining bouts. Other items to interest the sports men and women were the annual bowls tournament and the six-a-side soccer competition.
The marching and playing band of the 9/12th Royal Lancers provided a colourful and pleasant interlude. Other attractions included a motor club display, a stand showing stainless steel products made at Hapton, a quick sketch artist, a fortune teller and two steam wagons taken along by enthusiast Mr. Tom Varley of Gisburn. The fun fair provided endless amusement and there were donkey rides, Waldo the Clown and a mobile cinema.
