From a report by Sheila McLennan. Pictures by Alan Marsden:
Rain kept spectators from the Burnley Horticultural Society's summer show at the Municipal College at the weekend, but entries and quality were up. The Mayor was unable to attend because of a heavy cold but the Mayoress attended as planned. The presentation of trophies was made by Dr A. G. Cumberland, Principal of the college, who was accompanied by his wife and the show president Mr W. F. Haffner. Presenting the prizes Dr Cumberland said "A show of this kind deserves every encouragement, chiefly because it is a voluntary effort and the voluntary element in our life is something to cherish."

The show was a family affair for mother and daughter team Mrs Doris Balmforth of Darwen, and Mrs Jean Ainsworth of Houghton, both originally from Burnley. Mrs. Balmforth won the J. Vincent Cup for her entry in the church decoration section and her daughter surpassed this and won the premier award, the Burnley Horticultural Society Cup. Show chairman Mr Hartley won two awards - the Skipper Rose Bowl and the Mabel Hargreaves Cup and show treasurer Mr Hutchinson won the Neil Winn Cup. The George Ennis Cup, for most points in the floral art section, was won by Mrs Phyllis Hamer. Mr Clifford Moorhouse of Red Gate, Sabden won the Mrs Wilkinson Cup and the E. B. Emmott Cup with his vegetables. Mrs Marjery Bayliff of Todmorden Road, Burnley won the Dorothy Grey Cup in the soft toy and crochet sections. The Samuel Taylor Memorial Cup went to Mr Peter Whitehead of Wellfield Drive Burnley for his pot plants.
Burnley Express chargehand Mr John Barker of Kendal Street Burnley won all three prizes in the celery class, a first and second prize in the pea section; a first and third prize in the beetroot section; a first prize in the onion class; two second prizes in the dahlia class and a second in the colour transparency class. His wife Marie, recently won the dahlia shield at the Lucas Gala Show. Mr. Barker's entry in the potato section caused quite a stir for nothing quite like them has ever been seen at Burnley Show before. They were jet black potatoes from Peru.
