Spruce-Up For Spire

The £1,000 spruce-up to the spire of the now demolished St James's Church Burnley will be completed by the end of this week. It is the first-ever job new firm Maniss Scaffolding of Bradford, have done - and it has been a tricky one for them. "We should reach the tip of the spire by tomorrow, but the work has been made pretty tricky by the uneven shape of the spire with all its buttresses," said Mr Brendan Redman, a director of Maniss, yesterday, 12th July 1971. The spire's stonework is being cleaned by Regal from Colne. Work on the restoration of the spire began on June 17th and when this is completed and the garden area around it is laid out the project will have cost more than £8,000.
