As I forecast with confidence exactly a week ago, Leighton James showed all his class to force a brilliant Burnley success in the weekend's five-nation Washington (County Durham) international youth tournament, the final of which was staged on Sunday at Sunderland's Roker Park. In the space of 48 hours he ran four centre right-backs dizzy and produced an added bonus of five goals of the young clarets' seven in four games, including the only score in the final against the host club. Jimmy Adamson who joined chief coach Joe Brown, chief scout Dave Blakey and trainers Brian Miller and George Brays to watch the final said: "This is what Burnley is all about. Bringing on young players, developing their skills and giving them competitive experience".

Eight clubs took part in the tournament, the first of its kind in this country - Sunderland, Burnley, West Ham United and Sheffield United from England plus Standard Liege (Belgium), Offenbach Kickers (West Germany), Rotterdam (Holland) and Dunkirk. Burnley were in Group B with Sheffield United, Standard Liege and Offenbach Kickers. All group matches were held at Sunderland's training headquarters at nearby Washington, the rules of the competition stating that the two group winners would meet in the final at Roker Park together with the group runners-up also playing in the third place final. All the matches were of 25 minutes each way except the final which was 45 minutes each way.

Burnley's first match on Friday evening resulted in a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United, James putting Burnley ahead from the penalty spot and scoring the second too. On Saturday morning Burnley were a goal down to Standard Liege but James scored the equaliser. On Saturday evening the highlight of the 3-0 win over Offenbach was a mighty headed goal by Hankin; with Bobby Flavell and James scoring the other two. The final was a smart team show by the young Turf Moor lads who three times went close to scoring more goals but it was James who scored the winning goal when goalkeeper Swinburne was deceived by a swirling wind.
