Hand in hand, this young couple were among the crowd of Clarets supporters making their way to Saturday's match.

As the first "Burnley football special" arrived back in the town on Saturday night, 16th September 1972, plans were well advanced for the next trip in a month's time. More than 400 fans of all ages travelled to Hull to see the Clarets force a 1-1 draw. The organisers, the Turf Moor Development Association, were pleased with the success of this pioneer venture - but are hoping to make changes for the second excursion to Sheffield Wednesday on October 14th.

Burnley FC Commercial Manager Mr Jack Butterfield said: "I thought the young supporters behaved themselves reasonably well. They were on their feet all the time and were very boisterous but there was never any danger of damage being done to the train. I realise that there were certain parts of the train where families may have found it unpleasant and some may have doubts about travelling on the train next time. But changes will be made and we hope to keep everyone happy in future. This was a first time effort and we have learned a lot from it." For the next trip there will be a family section and a section for the younger fans.

Certainly the fans provided plenty of vocal support at the match. Manager Jimmy Adamson said: "The team were well aware of the big following they had and it was a great boost to them."
