New centre half Eric Gillespie is the player third from left between Mick Docherty and John Murray, and fair-haired goalkeeper Peter Mellor, who has been signed from Witton Albion and is 6ft. 2in. tall stands out in the centre.
With the season only four weeks away, Burnley FC players reported back for training on Wednesday. They got straight down to work at Gawthorpe after a welcome back from chairman Mr. Bob Lord and manager Mr. Harry Potts.
As the picture shows, chief coach Jimmy Adamson was on the ball with his start of training remarks to the playing staff. Mr. Adamson emphasised the importance of hard and dedicated training during the weeks leading up to the opening match of 1969-70 season, an away game against newly promoted Derby County on Saturday August 9th. Before that the Clarets have three friendly fixtures lined up, the last of the trio at Turf Moor on August 2nd. Second Division Middlesbrough will be the opponents and the new cricket field end stand will be opened that day by Lord Rhodes, the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire.
