Time for a rest for 20-year-old Lynne Roberts, attendent, after a spell on the parallel bars.
From an article by Bert Bolton:
Burnley's one-and-a-quarter million pounds William Thompson Recreation Centre .. "second to none throughout the whole of North-East Lancashire and probably beyond.." went on view to the Press yesterday, 18th April 1974, ten days before it opens its doors to the general public. Although the public will be able to take advantage of the leisure and sports activity complex from April 29th, the official opening is scheduled for May 24th. As yet an official opener has not been decided upon. It owes its existence to the generosity of the Burnley millionaire whose name it bears, and whose family have been benefactors to the town down the years.
The 100-week contract scheduled to build the complex has had its share of delays, mainly due to a shortage of materials and equipment. But once these delays had been overcome, the target opening date has been adhered to. The complex will provide unrivalled opportunities for everyone to participate in a very wide range of activities, regardless of weather conditions and the time of year. Greater opportunities will be available for coaching, and the total facilities will encourage use of the centre by the whole family, along with sports organisations.
