Young Defender Signs On

Burnley yesterday signed as a professional 18-year-old Richard Dixey, who has played regularly in the Southern League this season. Dixey, a 5ft. 2in. tall centre half, is a former Leicestershire county player and this season has appeared for Enderby Town, who play in the South League, north section. He was spotted by chief scout Dave Blakey and came to Turf Moor for trials, where in the past few weeks he has impressed the Burnley coaching staff.

There was strong competition for his signature with Nottingham Forest, Stoke and Leicester all showing interest. Richard said: "Burnley impressed me as the best club to join and I'm delighted to have signed for them. I'm determined to make the most of this opportunity that Burnley have given me and it's now an ambition to play First Division football." Dixey, an apprentice engineer by trade, was on amateur terms with Enderby Town so there was no fee involved in Burnley signing him professional. But he will not be eligible for the Burnley team in the FA Youth Cup because he has already played in the competition for Enderby. Manager Jimmy Adamson said: "We think Richard has a lot of potential. He is very strong in the air and although he still has plenty to learn we believe we can teach him what is necessary."
