Streamlined, thoroughly modern and strictly functional. That's Burnley's new council chamber now emerging in time for this week's District Council meeting on Wednesday evening. The chamber has undergone, in naval parlance, a "complete re-fit" since the old borough authority ceased to exist last April, to accommodate the 54 members of the new district authority and its chief officers.
Carpeting, beige leather-look wall panels, Scandinavian-type furnishings and a new lighting system combine to give the chamber a 70's look. One important item still missing from this recent picture is the coat of arms of the new authority, which will be mounted behind the Mayor's rostrum (upper left). Final detail work involving window areas and the public gallery still remains unfinished.
