Road Safety instruction became all-absorbing when pupils from St Leonard's School had a chance to use equipment as part of their curriculum.
St Leonard's CE School, Padiham, has become a pioneer in a new and exciting road safety project which could form a blueprint for other schools in the Burnley district. For the first time in the area the school has taken the lead in incorporating road safety into the daily curriculum over a one-week period. The project organised by Mr Derrick Sanderson, Burnley District Road Safety Officer, has gone so well that he hopes three more schools will follow the example set by St. Leonard's.
The course, arranged by headmaster Mr Raymond Sutcliffe in conjunction with members of his staff, included essays, charts and diagrams and road safety models. The accent throughout the seven days has been on participation and this has obviously paid off. The project culminated in a quiz held yesterday, and attended by parents. Road safety has been of particular interest to St Leonard's for some time. A while ago members of the Parent-Teacher Association conducted a survey of the traffic flow along nearby Moor Lane. Their aim was to assess the accident risk to schoolchildren crossing at that point, with a view to having some form of traffic control installed. A school crossing warden is now on daily duty and flashing amber lights have been installed on this stretch of road.
