But the town escaped the heavier fall experienced in the Blackburn/Darwen areas, but everywhere, the county police report, no difficulties were experienced in keeping main routes open. A "night watch" of workmen in the Burnley district Cleansing Department was out during the early hours, and later during Tuesday morning, gritting the main roads. A spokesman for the department said: "It didn't freeze. Road surfaces were always wet. We have been very fortunate so far this winter.
