Firemen tackle the blazing rubble of the Hammerton Street shop.

The demolition of a shop on the corner of Hammerton Street, Burnley, almost ended in disaster yesterday, when flames from a petrol driven chain saw set fire to the shell of the building. But the fire brigade arrived within minutes and soon had the blaze under control. Demolition began yesterday morning by AMK Builders and Shopfitters Ltd, from Cheshire.

Hammerton Street was blocked off to traffic all day.
