Burnley's new market hall was completed on Tuesday 7th October 1969 and officially handed over by Costain Construction Ltd, the building contractors, to the town council. The work, lasting 20 weeks since Costain's took over from previous contractors, ran exactly to time. This means that the hall is now ready for use, and some businesses are already proposing to move in. But the hall will not be opened until November 17th, by which time all but a few traders will have moved their businesses there. This is because there is still some uncompleted work at the rear of the building, including the building of a flyover ramp to first-floor level for traders' vans on the new open market. This work is also running to time and should be completed by the opening date.
