Four faces of Hallow-e'en - sisters Julie and Susan Hallaway with their traditional head-shaped Hallow-e'en lanterns. Julie, aged seven, and Susan, who is nine, are the daughters of Burnley Express photographic assistant Mrs Betty Hallaway. Members of the 21st Burnley St Stephen's Brownies, they made the lanterns themselves for the Brownies' Hallow-e'en party this week.
Hallow-e'en is the traditional time when witches meet on the slopes of Pendle. But one of the biggest "covens" will be held tomorrow at Readwood Riding School, when 30 to 40 of these "strange beings" will meet by firelight. In the background BBC television cameras will be trying to capture the event on film.
Meanwhile tonight hundreds of people will make the traditional Hallow-e'en climb up Pendle. It had been hoped to film this for television, but it was felt it would present difficulties.
