Dress Rehearsal Preview Of Light Opera Society's 'Wedding in Paris'

Seen at the dress parade at the Empire are (left to right) Joan Waterworth, Barry Pixton, Audrey Pearce, Evaline Metcalfe (wardrobe mistress) and Pat Cashmore.
Burnley Light Opera Society opened last night, the 10th November, at the Empire with "Wedding in Paris" and when I visited the theatre on Sunday afternoon it was to see the final preparations of what should be excellent family entertainment. Miss Hilda Basnett from her seat in the circle, directed the operation with a quick word of praise or correction, and Kenneth Healey blended singers and orchestra in the final rehearsal.
Stage manager Ian Sage had perhaps the toughest task, transforming the empire stage into an appropriate setting for the show, but he had the assistance of a veritable army of helpers, with lighting, sound and scenery experts working full out.
"Wedding in Paris" is a light, entertaining show, with catchy tunes and a simple story. The cast includes many well-known names in the amateur theatre - Harry Mayer, Joan Waterworth, Malcolm Gent, Dennis Murtagh, Pat Cashmore (who it will be remembered, made her first appearance with the Light Opera group last year in "My Fair Lady"), and Audrey Pearce (making her first appearance in a principal part and, from what I saw at the dress rehearsal, a very confident appearance).
Dress rehearsals may not be anything to go on, but I got the impression that once again the society had an excellent lively show to present, and I shall look forward to joining the crowds of Burnley people at the Empire to see once again a "real, live show," which is being presented each night this week.
