River Gets a New Course - And Will Later Be Hidden
River Gets a New Course - and Will Later Be Hidden ()

Seen from the temporary crossing to Bridge Street this is the course the river will take, passing through a box-like culvert. The work of diverting the River Brun, one of the jobs involved in Burnley's market area redevelopment, is going ahead satisfactorily, and it is expected that the excavations for the new course will be completed by the end of March. The new river bed will run from near the Standish Street bridge to the junction of Bridge Street and Bank Parade, thus cutting out a wide sweep of the present river. The work has meant cutting across the road junction, a task facilitated by the placing of a temporary bridge in Bridge Street and the closure to vehicles of Bank Parade. This week only a few feet of road separated the river from its new course. Before the breakthrough is completed a coffer dam will have to be constructed. When the whole project is completed by the end of July, the river will flow through a concrete box-shaped construction which will ultimately disappear from view as offices and shops in later phases of the redevelopment are built over it.
