What a shock' said 39 year-old Mr. Harry Pearson of 15 Deerstone Avenue, Burnley when he was called unexpectedly into the Managing Director's office at Burco Limited, Accrington on Wednesday morning to receive an award of £100 in a works "Suggestion Scheme".
Mr. Pearson had worked for the firm only 13 months in the paint shop. His award winning idea was an improved painting jig which will make easier work of painting components and double the output. Presenting the £100 in fivers the Managing Director, Mr. F. M. Ward said "This is the highest award paid out for one suggestion in the twelve years the scheme has been running". Mr. Pearson said he had never invented anything before. He said that he actually contrived a new and improved jig simply because the old one kept giving trouble. He had known nothing about the award until he was called to the office of the works manager, Mr. A. Duckworth, to meet Mr. Ward and other VIP's on the award making committee. Receiving the money had been a shock but a pleasant one and he would spend it on his wife and three children, Christine 12, Derek 9, and Kevin 6.
