Mrs. Sheila Maw

Making her second bid for a seat on Padiham Urban District Council, doctor's wife, Mrs. Sheila Maw, held Bankhouse Ward for the Tories with a majority of 159 votes in a three-cornered fight in the by-election on Wednesday. For Mrs. Maw who polled 366 votes the win was a reversal of the result last May when she was at the bottom of a three-cornered fight in Partridge Hill Ward.
Second in the poll was the liberal candidate Mr. John R. Lovell, a technical assistant at Mullard Limited Simonstone who polled 270 votes. Mr. Lovell, Chairman of Padiham Liberal Association, was also making is 2nd bid for a seat on the Council. Last May he came close to defeating the Council Chairman, Councillor Mrs. Nancy Fletcher, in Partridge Hill Ward. After a recount Councillor Mrs. Fletcher retained the seat by 9 votes.
The labour candidate in the by-election, 21 year old student nurse Mr. John Russell Thorpe, came at the bottom of the poll with 126 votes. Mr. Thorpe is Chairman of Padiham Young Socialists.
