Sunday's sunshine favoured several church walks, and two of them were joint events. And besides a procession, the Salvation Army held services and a festival of music to mark the young people's anniversary.
Celebrations began on Saturday afternoon with the crowning of the primary queen, Lisa Preen (6). After the ceremony a procession of Salvation Army Sunday School members, Brownies, Guides and friends marched round Burnley led by the citadel band. In the evening the young people presented a festival of music at the Holmes Street citadel.
The main event on Sunday was a joint event with members of St. Catherine's Church, led by the Salvation Army Band. The church rose queen, Catherine Maddox, and Sunday school members took part together with the Church Lads' Brigade and Church Girls' Brigade. A short service at St. Catherine's followed the procession and the vicar, the Rev. John Cayton, was guest speaker at two Salvation Army services during the day.
St. Cuthbert's and Elim Methodist churches held a joint annual procession of witness and the 88th anniversary services at Whittlefield Gospel Temperance Mission got under way with a parade through the district in the morning and the annual procession of witness in the afternoon with 70 walking.
