Members of a local riding club - the North-East Lancashire team - were placed fourth out of a total of 11 teams which competed in the northern area horse trials competition at Readwood Riding Stables, Read. The event, the eighth to be held at Readwood, was a miniature Badminton three-phase event. The team winners - Longton North - will compete with clubs from all over the country for the John Player Championship Trophy in the national final at Stoneleigh later this month. Longton South were placed second and the team from East Cheshire were third.
The course included cross-country, dressage and show jumping.
Out of 14 teams who sent in entry forms 11 turned out to compete and the event attracted more spectators than ever before. Two competitors - both girls - who took tumbles remounted and finished their events despite suffering from minor sprains.
