Burnley's library service is fulfilling a greater need than ever, said the Corporation Libraries and Arts Committee chairman, Councillor S. Blackston, after the annual inspection this week. He added: "With the advent of the open university the libraries are facing an increased demand for information on a wide range of subjects. A vital role will be played by us in making the opportunity of gaining academic qualifications open to all." Councillor Blackston said the inspection party was pleased with the progress made by branch libraries in taking strain off the central library, adding that the service offered to the housebound is a particularly rewarding development.

The party also noticed the wide range of service the libraries were able to offer outside their lending departments. Councillor Blackston pointed out "The department furnishes the municipal choir and orchestra and Burnley Light Opera Society with many of their musical scores. These extensions of our activities are to be welcomed if the service is to play an increasingly important role in the community."
