Week's Strike Is Cut Short

Strikers picketing Centenary Way transport depot question a driver outside the gates.

Only 12 hours after starting a week's strike, members of Burnley Corporation's Cleansing and Transport department made a dramatic decision to return to work on Monday 2nd November 1970. This followed a joint meeting between members of the two unions involved - the General and Municipal and the Transport and General Workers' Unions. At the meeting the men were advised by officials of both unions to resume full working pending the result of the independent inquiry which is being held in London.

During the day strike vigilantes picketed the Centenary Way depot as the planned week's stoppage got under way. Cars were stopped on entering the depot, but passengers were questioned politely and without incident. The strike has halted refuse collection and street cleansing and also hit school meals and some corporation services for mentally and physically handicapped children.

The workmen are asking for a 55s a week increase on basic rates of pay, and that claim is part of a national demand supported by the two unions. Meanwhile, the overtime ban and work-to-rule by other corporation manual workers continues.
