The final event at Hapton County Primary School before it merges with the Church of England School at Whitefield Street was a carol concert, attended by about 250 people. The merger is to come into force at the beginning of next year, and will see the end of the Whitefield Street school after 98 years. The teaching staff and pupils will be transferred to the county school, which has had an extra classroom built and the others modernised.
The concert involved 70 pupils and was the first of its type at the school, but it was such a success it is now hoped to make it an annual event.
