From an article by Sheila McLennan:
Although improvements at Burnley General Hospital might have stood still until the launching of a second phase of major developments - a million pound project due to start in April 1972 - a mini-transformation has been going on during this vital breathing space. The emphasis is on efficiency, streamlining of services and providing a host of facilities which have made visiting almost a pleasure. Already an almost executive style reception area, decorated in tangerine, green and white, is in service. Situated at the entrance leading from Casterton Avenue it is planned to deal with the admission of patients to the medical and surgical blocks, and has two part-time receptionists on duty from Monday to Saturday, as well as for two hours on Sunday.

Another addition to the hospital's facilities is the provision of a new X-ray unit which went into service on Monday, 15th January 1971. Complete with modern changing cubicles, each with gay floral curtains, the unit has its own office suite, darkroom and extensive range of equipment. In charge of the department is Mr N. T. Morris (group superintendent radiologist tutor, who works under Dr A. Attwood, the consultant radiologist). A new lift project is already changing the skyline of the hospital, for building is now under way for an engineering job which will service the acute block. Perhaps the most revolutionary project of all is the £35,000 nurses training school and educational centre which will replace Reedley School of Nursing, now scheduled for closure. The school and centre, which is now beginning to take shape, will be completed in the spring of 1972.
