Coal Mining

Numerous Coal Mines have been worked in Burnley, including at Barclay Hills, Bee Hole, Clifton, Cornfield, Fulledge, Gannow, Habergham, Rowley, Towneley and Whittlefield. But in 1950, after nationalisation only three, Bank Hall, Clifton and Hapton Valley were operational. Clifton closed in 1955, Bank Hall in 1971 and Hapton Valley in 1982. These images, mainly from November 1966 tell the story of the struggles of the declining pits until their closure.
