Hurstwood Reservoir was completed in 1925. Although work had begun in 1910 engineering problems and the outbreak of war had caused the long delay. Cant Clough Reservoir was begun in 1885 and completed in 1892, delayed by disputes and engineering problems. In 1846 Burnley Improvement Commissioners acquired Calf Hey Well and Swinden Reservoirs from a private company and began the development of the municipal waterworks. By 1951 additional reservoirs had been created at Heckenhurst (1850), Swinden No.2 (1870) and Swinden No. 1 increased in size (1864) and Lea Green. (From the History of Burnley Part IV by W.
