Burnley In Revenge Win

From a report by Don Smith:
Burnley gained some consolation for their home defeat by Lowerhouse earlier in the season by a comfortable victory at the village ground on Saturday, 19th June 1971, scoring 161 for seven in 32 overs and sending the West Enders back for 55. Harold Rhodes took a vital hand in proceedings, taking seven wickets for 26 in 11.7 overs.

Invariably the Lowerhouse derby game is savoured by an incident which makes the atmosphere tense, if not explosive. Saturday's involved the old episode of a batsman at the non-striker's end being run out by the bowler for being out of his ground when backing up. The batsman was Clifford Maden and the sharp-eyed bowler Des Sparks, who roused the wrath of the Burnley supporters for his part in the occurrence. Maden was moving out of the crease in support of Rowland Harrison who was preparing to receive the bowling when Sparks ended his run-up by removing the bails. Spectators argued that the batsmen should have been warned but the Laws of Cricket back the bowler - and make no mention of a warning.

Highlight of the Burnley innings was the batsmanship of Roland Harrison who batted throughout for 83 not out, hitting seven boundaries and a six. Lowerhouse made a sensational start. Duncan Hall hit the first ball off Rhodes for four and he and Brian Higgin took nine off the first over. Higgin was caught for four and that catastrophe started the Lowerhouse slide to disaster. Rhodes took seven for 17 and half the Lowerhouse wickets were down for 28 and they reached the half-century in the 20th over when eight batsmen were out. The match was concluded two overs and seven balls later with Richardson catching John Stott, the wicketkeeper's second victim.
