The Padiham Civic Week darts tournament at the Royal Legion on Tuesday, 26th March 1974, was won by Jack North, who defeated Keith Bradshaw (Whalley Range) 2-0 in the final to win the Burnley Express trophy.
From the quarter finals North lost only one leg, for after defeating Terry Balmbra (Starkie Arms) 2-0 he faced elimination by the Bridge expert, Bernard Rushton, in the semi-final but fought back to win 2-1. Rushton's victim in the quarter-final was Alan Bond (Bridge, Hapton), who won the first leg. Bill Greenwood (Railway) beat Peter Atherton (Lowerhouse) 2-0 and Keith Bradshaw disposed of Jimmy Bury (Barracks) 2-1. Although Greenwood levelled at 1-1, Bradshaw was in top form in the third leg and checked with his opponent requiring 19 to reach the final.
The second semi-final between such class players as North and Rushton was the expected high scoring tense encounter. There were 13 scores of 95 and over and in the last leg the Legion player raced away with two tons and a 123.
Callers duties were shared by T. Jackson and A. Livesey, and marker was F. Goodwin, with Sid Ward, secretary of the Padiham Darts League, as compere. The Express Trophy and replicas for the semi-finalists were presented by Don Smith, of the Burnley Express sports staff.
