Railway Get A Mauling. Park View 3 - Padiham Railway 0

Ian Ponton puts Park View two goals up with a fine header that had the Padiham defence beaten all the way.

From a report by Richard Catlow:
Effort wins you nothing, it's the goals that earn the points. That's the cruel lesson that Padiham Railway SC must learn from their 3-0 mauling at the hands of Parkview in Division One of Burnley Amateur Combination on Saturday, 16th November 1974. In a game in which both sides had there chances to score, the biggest difference between them was in the penalty area, where Park View were razor sharp and Railway seemed to run out of imagination.

All three goals came before half-time as Park View, coached by former Burnley FC player Jimmy Robson, and lying in third place at the start of the day, sought to maintain their championship challenge. Tom Patrick had a hand in the goals. He opened the score after five minutes, hitting hard and low into the corner of the net. Five minutes later Patrick laid on a fine cross for Ian Ponton to score with a header, and in the 42nd minute he sent Ponton clear on the flank to round in on the goalkeeper and make it three.

In the second half Railway had their moments with Lindsey a powerhouse in midfield and the tricky Malcolm Lane on the wing creating problems for the Park View defence. In the 70th minute Lane produced one of the best shots of the match, a 10 yard striker which Holden did well to palm for a corner. Hall was the only Padiham player who managed to find the net, but he was ruled offside.
