Two days ago, 2nd September 1970, Rediffusion Limited opened a new shop at 10 Market Place, Burnley. They are a local company, under local management, but part of a big nationwide organisation which is poised to give group backing when and where it is required. And champagne corks will be popping in some Burnley homes this week, for everyone who rents a TV set from the new shop gets a full bottle of champagne free. Mr. William Nightingale who is managing the shop, handed over several bottles to new customers on Wednesday morning.
In the modern spacious shop the accent is on colour television. Rediffusion can offer three programmes in colour on wired sets - not always possible with aerials. The shop sells and rents television sets, both wired and aerial ones, radiograms, tape recorders and transistors. Services cover an area from Padiham to Barnoldswick, and involve about 20,000 customers and 30 radio controlled vehicles.
Rediffusion took over Top Rank in Burnley in 1968 and have offices and service departments in Marles Street Burnley and a shop at 8 St. James's Street which will close to make way for the new shop in Market Place.
