FORMER Earby man Derek Greenwood returned to the area at the weekend and brought with him the West of England Brass Band champions.
He is the conductor of Camborne Band from Cornwall, which, two weeks ago, retained its title as West of England champions. The band was in the North of England to take part in the Granada “Band of the Year" contest, so members of Barnoldswick Brass Band invited them to stay at their homes.
The Camborne band gave a special performance on Saturday night at the Barnoldswick Independent Methodist schoolroom to a packed crowd of over 300. The concert raised over £100 for Barnoldswick band‘s instrument fund.
The band was very well received and was introduced by Barnoldswick band leader Mr Harold Smith. who also conducted one item.
Derek Greenwood organised and conducted the rest of the performance. He was a member of Earby Band until he joined the Grenadier Guards and became the regimental band’s lead euphonium player.
He left the guards to take up the part-time leader of Camborne band two year‘s ago.
