Burnley Light Opera Society

The dancing girls who personify 'A Fine Healthy Nature'.

From a review by Norman Powell:
A new chapter in the history of the Burnley Light Opera Society opens tonight, Tuesday the 12th October 1971, with the production of the musical "Maritza," at the Municipal College Theatre. The society, accustomed to playing in large, professional theatres, have had to adapt themselves to circumstances. From what I saw at the final rehearsal on Sunday, 10th October 1971, everything points to a bright successful show. People are sometimes reluctant to go and see a show with which they are not familiar, I can assure would-be patrons that 'Maritza' is a gay, charming and colourful musical.

There is a new look about the cast. Though Barbara Coulthurst and Joan Waterworth are well-known players, Joe Horridge and Roy Oldroyd are both new-comers to the Burnley amateur stage. The show abounds with tuneful melodies. While the Municipal College Theatre is small, it has a comfortable, intimate atmosphere, with first class seating. "Maritza" opens tonight and will continue for a fortnight. It is a matter of regret that the Empire Theatre is no longer available. Hilda Basnett is the producer, and Kenneth Healey the musical director. It is worth noting that there is no overture, and patrons are advised to be in their seats early.
