Balancing his way to his second annual consecutive victory in the Empire Bingo balancing act, is Peter Coulton, of Burnley.

The "balancing act," which last year raised money to help to buy a motorised invalid chair, now appears to have become an annual fixture on stage at the Empire Bingo Hall. Last year the "act", which involved balancing on an axle between two wheels, a type of "suspension" used for a child's cart, raised £105. This year it has been staged for entertainment value only at the bingo hall.

But the winner was the same as last year, Mr Peter Coulton, of Cedar Street, Burnley. His balancing feat, on the wobbly wheels, ensured that his name went on the cup which has been donated for the event, for a second time. About half a dozen would-be balancing "champs" took part. After the event, which took place on Friday evening, the 25th January 1974, during an interval between bingo sessions, the hall's manager, Mr K. Duxbury, told the Burnley Express: "It is a thing which we started last year, for charity, but which proved so popular that we decided to have it annually. There is a lot of interest and it creates a good laugh." Competitors had to try to balance on the axle between the two small wheels. The idea was to see who could travel farthest across the hall's stage.
