Frank Casper clutches his knee as Dave Merrington arrives to treat him. A previously unpublished image.
From a match report by John Walton:
Fifteen minutes gone at Turf Moor on Saturday. Comeback man Frank Casper has the ball just inside the left touchline in the Everton half. With no opponent near he plays a square pass - and then sinks to the ground clutching his knee, apparently in great pain. I've never known before the eerie silence that descended on Turf Moor as the stretcher came on and Casper was carried over the touchline for treatment. The crowd feared the worst, but it was all a nasty scare. For after a couple of minutes' treatment from reserve team coach Dave Merrington, assistant manager Joe Brown, and the Everton trainer, Casper was back on his feet and back on the field, to a loud cheer from the crowd.
Everton Reserves had scored the one goal needed to win the match a minute before Casper went down hurt, but all eyes were on the former Rotherham player and Mick Docherty, making a dual return to competitive football after going through two knee operations apiece and the pain and toil of building themselves up to match fitness. Both players were in the thick of it before the game was three minutes old. First Docherty diverted a goalbound Joe Royle header over the bar under great pressure from Irving, then Casper was put through by an incisive pass from Joe Jakub but could only shoot straight at Lawson as the goalkeeper came off his line.
In the second half Everton were content to sit on their lead but were shocked in the 57th minute when Kevin Kennerley latched on to a Nulty free-kick and slammed the ball past Lawson. The referee at first gave the goal but then disallowed it after consulting his linesman who was flagging for offside. Bradshaw hit the bar with a delicate chip and Colin Morris shot inches wide after working a neat one-two with Casper, but Burnley were destined not to get the ball in the net.
