SIXTEEN YEAR-OLD Janice Pilkington became the first Guide in the 5th Barnoldswick St Andrews Methodist Company to win a Queen's Award – and the first in West Craven for several years.
Janice, of Brogden Hall Farm, Barnoldswick, had to take a number of tests to reach the standards required, winning 16 badges on her way to the award.
The County Commissioner for N. E. Lancs, Mrs Thompson, presented Janice, a pupil at Skipton Girls’ High School, with her certificate and badge at a special ceremony at St Andrew's on Monday evening.
Guider Mrs Pat George said that to gain a Queen‘s Award was quite difficult. One had not been won in the town for several years and it was a great achievement on the part of Janice.
The company was formed nine years ago by Mrs George, and Janice has been a member for five years. The maximum age for a Guide is 15, but she is staying with the company as a young leader.
