TWO Pendle girls helped make it a local “one-two" at the All-England Dance Festival held in London.
Nine-year-old Denise Nuttall, of Standroyd Drive, Colne, won the gold medal in the modern solo class in her age group – making her national champion — and followed up by taking the silver medal in the national solo section.
And Sarah Clough (10), of Hibson Road, Nelson, was the silver medal winner in the modern solo class for her age group.
Both girls are members of the Susan Chippendale School of Dancing, Colne, and a school representative said: “As far as we know it is the first time any dancers from the school have achieved success at this level. They have done exceptionally well to even reach the final stages and we are very proud of them.”
Denise, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Nuttall, has been dancing since she was three years old and her sister Sharon attends the same dancing school. She is a pupil at Christ Church Primary School, Colne.
Sarah is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jeff Clough, and started dancing when she was four. She was a pupil at St Paul's CE School, Nelson, until the end of the summer term and will go on to Mansfield High School, Brierfield, when school starts again next month. _
Both girls practised every day in the build-up to the finals, which were held at Hornsey Town Hall. They said the finals were held in a relaxed atmosphere and they were not at all nervous in competing at such a high level.
The judges for the event included Hot Gossip dance group choreographer Arlene Phillips and dancer Roy Gale, and both girls were delighted with their success.
They qualified for the finals by doing well in the North of England finals held in Ossett earlier this year
