The BBC "Songs of Praise" service recorded in St. Peter's Church Burnley on Wednesday night, the 16th December 1970, was a truly ecumenical occasion, with representatives of all local churches taking part. Taking part in the service were St. Peter's Church Choir, Burnley Municipal Choir and Orchestra, Burnley Girls' High School Choir, and choirs from other churches in Burnley. The organist was Mrs. R. Webster, and musical arrangements were all under the conductorship of Mr. Robert Atherton. Among the guests were the Mayor and Mayoress of Burnley, Ald. and Mrs. E. J. Willis, and the wife of Burnley MP, Mrs. D. Jones. The church was packed with 359 people from the various churches, who had tea in St. Peter's schoolroom between the rehearsal and the recording.
The music for one of the hymns sung by the congregation, "God My Father, Loving Me," was composed by Caroline Jackson, a member of St. Peter's Church and Burnley High School Choir. The hymns were introduced by BBC announcer Geoffrey Wheeler, and at the end of the service the blessing was given by the Bishop of Burnley, the R. Rev. Richard C. C. Watson.
