The Magnificent Seven Gold Award Winners, All From Rosegrove

Linda Carter aged 19 lives at Rutland Avenue. She works at Burnley Building Society and entered the award scheme in February 1967. Linda will shortly be changing her name to Goodwill for she is to married on February 27th.

The award of seven gold badges under the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme to members of Rosegrove Methodist Church must constitute a record for the district. Burnley has a very good record in all sections of the scheme, but it is very unusual for so many young people from one organisation to qualify in the gold section at the same time. The four boys are all members of the 1st Burnley Boys' Brigade attached to Rosegrove Methodist, and the three girls are members of the Girls' Brigade.

All the boys have qualified through the Boys' Brigade and all agree that the toughest section was the series of expeditions in the Lake District, where all four qualified with high marks in map and compass work. They also attended courses in Sunday school teaching and youth leadership, and all four are actively engaged in the work of the Boys' Brigade at Rosegrove. All three girls have followed similar pursuits, and their service has included 12 months at Fern Bank Children's Home (weekly visits), residential youth leaders training courses, and Sunday school teaching. Other aspects of the scheme have been undertaken through the Girls' Brigade programme.

All seven would be first to acknowledge the training and guidance they have received from the company captain, Mr. K. Tomlinson, and the captain of the Girls' Brigade, Mrs. M. Stevenson. The Mayor, Ald. E. J. Willis will present the gold badges at the Town Hall on March 5th and it is expected that all will receive invitations to the next reception for gold award winners at Buckingham Palace.

Following a fire in September 1982 Rosegrove Methodist Church closed and the congregation amalgamated with Lowerhouse to become Greenbrook. An image of the church can be found on Lancashire County Council's Red Rose collection at:
