Bid to end muddy knees

Walshaw’s ”smarties” from left to right, Rosemarie Noble, Catherine Walton, Janet Forrest, Adele Brunton, Caroline Crowther, and Karen Reith.
The long path from Eastern Avenue to Walshaw High School is quite often a mud bath and the Parent Teacher Association has set about doing something about it. “Operation Cinder Path” is now going toward the £5000 target they have set to get the path tarmacadamed. A spokesman said the girls arrive at school with muddy shoes and socks. Due to government cut backs it is not possible to have the path tarmacadamed in the foreseeable future. The latest fund raising effort contributed £400, nearly 1000 packets of smarties were handed out, contents eaten, and the packs returned full of ½ p and 1p pieces. A Christmas Fair will be the main event, planned for 22nd November at the school. Third year girls Rosemarie Noble and Catherine Walton, have also recently finished a sponsored five mile swim.
