A welcome to Burnley for four new apprentices from club skipper Dave Merrington and Arthur Bellamy. From left: Merrington, John ferguson, Peter Harris, Billy Rodaway, Joe McNamara, and Bellamy. Both Ferguson and Rodaway were in last season's England Schools XI.
The new football season, now four weeks away, is likely to be one of Burnley's busiest. They are to take part in the British Cup, on top of normal commitments in First Division, FA Cup and League Cup.
Another surprise for the players when they resumed training at Gawthorpe was that they have a new head trainer. And there is a fresh appointment for Mexico man Ralph Coates.
In bright early morning sunshine at Gawthorpe Mr. Lord welcomed back the club's 29 full time professionals and 12 apprentices. Then it was quickly down to training under the supervision of manager Adamson, chief coach Joe Brown, head trainer Brian Miller and reserve team trainer George Bray. The 29 senior professionals are: John Angus, Arthur Bellamy, Frank Casper, Eddie Cliff, Ralph Coates, Doug Collins, Martin Dobson, Mick Docherty, Billy Ingham, Leighton James, Rodney Jones, Peter Jones, Steve Kindon, Len Kinsella, Les Latcham, Peter Mellor, Dave Merrington, Duncan McMahon, Geoff Nulty, Jeff Parton, Eric Probert, Ray Ternent, Dave Thomas, Jim Thomson, Colin Waldron, Ronnie Welch, Alan West, Dave Wilson and Wilf Wrigley.
The 12 apprentices are: Paul Bradshaw, Ian Brennan, Graham Dalton, John Ferguson, Michael Finn, Alan Gordon, Peter Harris, Joe McNamara, Colin Morris, Billy Rodaway, Terry Ward and Harry Wilson.
Burnley have just beaten a host of clubs for the signature (as an associate schoolboy) of Brian Flynn, 14-year-old Welsh Schools inside right. John Gannon, last season's England Schools' centre forward, will be arriving soon to join the squad of apprentices.
