David Thomas scores Burnley's goal against Liverpool at Turf Moor on Saturday, giving goalkeeper Ray Clemence no chance at the end of a move begun by Ralph Coates.
From a longer article by Keith McNee. Burnley 1 - Liverpool 2
Oh dear, Burnley! What an unhappy way to launch a new season. What a wretched start after all that talk about the "Team of the Seventies" and of getting into the honours list. This was a sad and very sorry show, a sobering spectacle which left Turf Moor fans dejected and plunged manager Jimmy Adamson into a pit of deep disappointment. Jimmy Adamson managed to put a brave face on things and afterwards summed up: "Liverpool came here full of confidence and relaxed. Our players knowing Liverpool's record at Turf Moor were tense and nervous. On the day there is no doubt Liverpool were superior."
Liverpool were overwhelmingly on top in the first 30 minutes and their first goal was no shock. Hughes took a free kick and when the ball spun off the defenders', Evans volleyed fiercely into the back of the net. Burnley's one moment of glory came four minutes from the break when Thomas rapped a fierce shot into the middle of the goal to draw level.
Burnley tightened up at the back in the second half but still the forwards were out of tune. Burnley seemed to be holding their own but then lost ground again, letting Liverpool dictate and score a second goal when Hughes powered a left-foot swerving shot just inside the post. Only when they were in arrears again did the tension appear to lift off the Clarets and in the last seven minutes they twice went near to getting an equaliser.
