Ralph Coates in possession at Maine Road.
From a longer article by Keith McNee:
Genial Joe Mercer, the Manchester City manager, had the largest cigar for miles around after this match - ond one of the biggest hearts. He was quickly into the Burnley dressing room at Maine Road to say: "Well done lads, you thoroughly deserved your point."
Based around a policy of containment, there was not too much adventure about the teams efforts. The defence played tenaciously, competitively and professionally throughout the 90 minutes and the forwards always kept possession impressively, while not showing as much punch as one would have liked. In the first 20 minutes when there was only one team in it - it wasn't City - Thomas was at the heart of every Burnley attack and could well have snatched his third goal of the season. Probert was the name on everyone's lips at the interval, for he had worked so hard and with so many bright ideas in midfield.
City hardly ever looked like breaking through Burnley's compact defence. It was 30 minutes before City had a serious shot at goal and then Lee was miles off target, as was Doyle a minute later.
