Burnley Miners' Social Club was formed in 1918 above a furniture shop in Plumbe Street. More than 60 years later it is still there and only the name and size of the club has changed. It started out as the Miners' Prosperity Lodge, and prosper it did.
The lodge was run over Harling's Furniture Shop. It started in a small way and has grown out of all recognition. The original room is now the concert room and is a luxurious contrast to the humble facilities on first opening. It has just been refurbished providing first-class comfort and attractions for the 430 club members.
Soon afterwards Harling's moved out of the downstairs shop and the club bought up the premises. It is now the main area for the club's activities, where members can go to play snooker, darts, dominoes, don or just have a quiet drink. About 35 years ago, the club again moved into the market and snapped up a grocer's shop next to the building. In the last few years it has enabled the club to expand the downstairs room.
Miners no longer make up the majority membership of the club, but the name has lingered on. It draws members from all walks of life and now there is a waiting list to join. One reason for this is the variety of activities, and members enjoy a good deal of success at bar games. The club boasts three snooker teams, four domino teams, four don teams and darts and cricket teams.
