Muslems, Hindus, Jews and Christians joined in a service of prayers for racial harmony at St Peter's Parish Church, Burnley on Sunday, 21st March 1971. There was a magnificent turnout, with about 300 people attending, including the civic heads of Nelson and Colne, and the MP's for Burnley (Mr Dan Jones) and Nelson and Colne (Mr David Waddington). Prayers were read by the Bishop of Burnley, the Rt Rev. R. C. C. Watson, Councillor S. Blackston representing the Jewish faith, the Moslem Immam, whose Arabic prayers were translated by Mr R. Malik, and Mrs A. Hargreaves representing the Baha'i faith. All denominations of the Christian faith were represented, including the Society of Friends and the Salvation Army.

Organised by the North East Lancashire Community Relations Council, the service marked the beginning of "Harmony 1971" called for by the United Nations throughout the world. Many more social activities are planned, including an international open day in June. This week an exhibition by immigrant children is being staged in Barrowford, and this will also be seen throughout the district.
