Faced at the offset with some public opinion because of the abandonment of the traditional Whit processions, the organisers of the Nelson Whit Sunday procession and united service found further difficulties in their way when they came to the start of the united service at Seedhill football field on Sunday afternoon.
For the public address system at the ground was locked up and beyond reach. Police came to the rescue however and the Rev. Norman Forster, who conducted the service, did so from a police loudspeaker van.
The organisers estimated that well over 1,000 people and nearer 2,000 were present.
