Two women were trapped in the lift at the Inland Revenue offices yesterday. Mrs Joan Morgan and Mrs Edna Eustace had to wait for the police and fire brigade to free them from the lift at Safeway House yesterday after being prisoners for an hour and a half. The lift stuck between the second and third floors. Firemen took it up to the top floor as it was “easier to go up than down.” When the lift got to the top floor, the trouble had only just begun. The door was caught at the top and firemen had to force it open. This was the longest part of the operation. After they were released, Mrs Morgan of Ridge Avenue told our reporter “It was OK until the lights went out.” Mrs Eustace, of Cavour Street, added “I was just glad I had some company.”
As if this wasn’t enough for the emergency services, while they were carrying out the rescue, a Todmorden Corporation bus collided with a police car which was parked outside Safeway House.
