Jimmy Gabriel watches anxiously as Paul Fletcher gets in a shot during the first half. Unfortunately for Burnley the ball went too high.

From a Match Report by Keith McNee:
Jimmy Adamson revealed that even before Paul Fletcher was signed he had decided that David Thomas would be left out of the team saying "he has not fully recovered from a back strain that has troubled him for some time and has played in recent games when he should really have been rested." Southampton's highly-seasoned campaigners were too strong, professional and skilful for a Burnley team that still promises so much more than it achieves. Southampton did not do as much attacking as the Clarets in the general sense, but when they did go forward they had more flair and fire power and, had their finishing been accurate, they could almost have run up a cricket score.

I can remember only three occasions when Burnley managed to break through the wall of yellow-shirted defenders. First when Kindon finally had a shot pounced on near the post by confident keeper Martin, second when Dobson's header was booted away off the line by Kirkup and lastly when Fletcher danced through from the right only to be thwarted by the speed of Martin's interception.

There was no shock at all when Southampton edged ahead in the 82nd minute. Paine, on the left, floated a centre across the penalty area and the unmarked Jenkins had time to steady himself before sending the ball back. Channon gave Walters no chance with a good header that went sailing just inside the right-hand post.
